Alstom Transport develops and markets a complete range of systems, equipment and service in the railway industry. It is one of the world's largest manufacturers of high-speed trains, tramways and metros, electrical and diesel trains, information systems, traction systems, power supply systems and track work. The company also operates in the rail infrastructure market, designing, producing and installing infrastructure for the rail network. These includes information solutions, electrification, communication systems, track laying, station utilities, as well as workshops and depots. Maintenance, rebuilding, and renovation services are also provided by the company. Alstom Transport operates in 70 countries and employs 26,000 people.
Notable products includes series production of the TGV high-speed trains with over 650 train sets sold over 25 years, as well as the AGV (Automotrice Grande Vitesse) unveiled in February 2008 and which entered service with NTV in Italy in 2012. Since a merger with General Railway Signal in 1998, Alstom has been manufacturing railway signaling equipment at a former GRS factoring located in a suburb near Rochester, New York.
Since 2002, Alstom has manufactured the Pendolino tilting train, following the acquisition of Fiat Ferroviaria.
The company also produces Citadis trams; as of 2007, over 1100 Citadis trams are in use by 28 cities including DublinAlgiersBarcelonaMelbourne and Paris

ABB is one of the largest engineering companies as well as one of the largest conglomerates in the world. ABB has operations in around 100 countries, with approximately 150,000 employees in November 2013, and reported global revenue of $40 billion for 2011.
ABB is traded on the SIX Swiss Exchange in Zürich and the Stockholm Stock Exchange in Sweden since 1999, the New York Stock Exchange in the United States since 2001, September 2005 on London Stock Exchange and in November 2005 on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange.


Siemens Mobility is a division of the German Siemens AG conglomerate. Prior to the corporate restructuring of Siemens AG (effective from 1 January 2008) Siemens Transportation Systems was the operational division most closely related to Siemens Mobility; products produced included automation and power systems, rolling stock for mass-transit, railway signalling and control systems, and railway electrification.
The group also incorporates the former railway rolling stock and locomotive division Siemens Schienenfahrzeugtechnik (Siemens Railway Technology).


Bombardier Transportation is the rail equipment division of the Canadian firm Bombardier Inc. Bombardier Transportation is one of the world's largest companies in the rail-equipment manufacturing and servicing industry. The division is headquartered in BerlinGermany.
Bombardier Transportation produces a wide range of products including passenger rail vehicleslocomotivesbogies,propulsion, and controls, in addition to offering a number of services.
GE Transportation, formerly known as GE Rail, is a division of General Electric. The organization manufactures equipment for therailroad, marine, mining, drilling and energy generation industries. It is headquartered in Chicago, Illinois while their main manufacturing facility is located in Erie, Pennsylvania. Locomotives are assembled at the Erie plant, while engine manufacturing takes place in Grove City, Pennsylvania.
GE Transportation is the largest producer of diesel-electric locomotives for both freight and passenger applications in North America, believed to hold up to a 70% market share. It also produces related products, such as railroad signaling equipment, and parts for locomotives and railroad cars, as well as providing repair services for GE and other locomotives.



AnsaldoBreda S.p.A. is a loss-making rail transport engineering company based in Italy. The company designs and manufactures railway and mass transit vehicles and is part of the Finmeccanica group. On 24 February 2015, Hitachi announced it had entered into an agreement to buy AnsaldoBreda from Finmeccanica.
In 1853, the company Gio. Ansaldo & C. was registered in Genoa as a manufacturer of steam locomotives, rail rolling stock and steam engines. The company was supported by the Minister of Finance, Camillo Benso, Count of Cavour, who aimed to reduce the State of Savoy's dependence on imported trains and rolling stock.
In 1886, Ernesto Breda founded Ing. Ernesto Breda and C., the company which became Società Italiana Ernesto Breda (SIEB) in 1899.
In 1989 both Ansaldo and Breda participated in a consortium for the design and manufacturing of the ETR500 high speed train.
AnsaldoBreda was formed in 2001 by the merger of Ansaldo Trasporti and Breda Costruzioni Ferroviarie, and is part of the Finmeccanica group. It has production sites at four locations in Italy: NaplesReggio CalabriaPalermo, and Pistoia.
The company employs about 2,400 people. Salvatore Bianconi was the Chief Executive Officer of AnsaldoBreda from 2008 to 2011, when he was succeeded by Maurizio Manfellotto.
Electro-Motive Diesel, Inc., also referred to as "EMD", is owned by Caterpillar through its wholly owned subsidiary Progress Rail Services Corporation. The company designs, manufactures and sells diesel-electric locomotives and diesel power engines under the Electro-Motive Diesel brand. EMD offers an extensive range of locomotive products in the rail industry.
Electro-Motive Diesel, Inc. traces its roots to the Electro-Motive Engineering Corporation, founded in 1922. In 1930, General Motors Corporation purchased the Winton Engine Co. and Winton's primary customer of gasoline engines, the Electro-Motive Company (a gasoline-electric car manufacturer), combining the two to form GM's Electro-Motive Division (EMD) on January 1, 1941.
In 2005, GM sold EMD to Greenbriar Equity Group LLC and Berkshire Partners LLC, which formed Electro-Motive Diesel, Inc., to facilitate the purchase. On August 2, 2010, Progress Rail Services Corporation completed the purchase of Electro-Motive Diesel, Inc. from Greenbriar, Berkshire, et al. making Electro-Motive Diesel, Inc. a wholly owned subsidiary of Progress Rail Services Corporation, a subsidiary of Caterpillar Inc.

Knorr-Bremse is a manufacturer of braking systems for rail and commercial vehicles that has operated in the field for over 100 years. Other products in Group's portfolio include intelligent door systems, control components, air conditioning systems for rail vehicles, and torsional vibration dampers, transmission control systems for commercial vehicles. In 2013, the Group's workforce of over 19,000 achieved worldwide sales of EUR 4.3 billion. The Group has over 90 locations in 27 countries.

Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles (CAF) is a Spanish private company which manufactures railway vehicles and equipment. It is based in Beasain in the Basque Country. Equipment manufactured by CAF includes light rail vehicles, rapid transit trains, railroad cars and locomotives, as well as variable gauge axles that can be fitted on any existing truck or bogie.
Over the 20 years from the early 1990's, CAF benefitted from the rail investment boom in its home market in Spain to become a world player with a broad technical capability, able to manufacture almost any type of rail vehicle. CAF has supplied railway rolling stock to a number of major urban transit operators around Europe, the USA, South America, East Asia, India and North Africa.
Hyundai Rotem is a South Korean company manufacturing rolling stock, defense products and plant equipment. It is part of the Hyundai Motor Group. Its name was changed to the current one from Rotem on December 2007, and later changed to Hyundai Rotem to reflect its owner.
Notable projects include supplying most of South Korea's rolling stock, which include Korail's KTX high speed trains, Electric multiple units, and Electric locomotives. Other products in South Korea includes supplying all of Seoul MetroSeoul Metropolitan Rapid Transit, and Shinbundang Line's Electric multiple units. International products include Hong Kong MTR's K-Stocks, commuter EMUsfor Taiwan, trains for the New Delhi Metro, and automated trains for the Canada Line between downtown Vancouver and Richmondin British ColumbiaCanada. They are also to supply the Silverliner V commuter trains for SEPTA Regional Rail in the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania area. The Philippine National Railways have partnered with Hyundai Rotem to upgrade and construct its train and stations in the Luzon island for convenience and fast transportation; the trains have been delivered and are currently in service.

Hitachi Rail is involved in designing and manufacturing many models of Shinkansen vehicles, including the N700 Series Shinkansen and the THSR 700T for Taiwan High Speed Rail.
Hitachi markets a general-purpose train known as the "A-train", which utilises double-skin friction stir welded aluminium body construction. The A-train concept can be customized to form a commuter train like the automated 3000 series train for the Nanakuma Line, a limited express train like the E257 series, or a high-speed train such as the Class 395 operating in the UK. In June 2008, Hitachi also submitted a tender for the UK's Intercity Express Programme.
Hitachi and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries agreed to cooperate in the field of international intra-city railway systems in 2010.
